Sam Smith just added something very important to your holiday list with a new single to accompany the Netflix reboot of the beloved 1972 children’s novel Watership Down. The singer released the stirring ballad on Friday morning (Dec. 21), writing, “So honoured to be a part of the new @BBCone/ @Netflix adaptation of Watership Down. This story is so powerful and timeless and it’s been thrilling to work on a song for it. I hope everyone loves it as much as I do.”

Richard Adams’ novel has been turned into a four-part Netflix animated series with Nicholas Hoult taking on the part of rabbit Fiver, who leads his ragtag band of seven bunnies on an epic mission to find a new home. Smith’s emotional theme song taps into the story’s roller-coaster of fear, hope and friendship, opening with the lyrics, “My mother said I’m too romantic/ She said, ‘You’re dancing in the movies’/ I almost started to believe her/ Then I saw you and I knew/ Maybe it’s ’cause I got a little bit older/ Maybe it’s all that I’ve been through.”

“I am so excited and honored to be a part of this new adaptation of Watership Down,” said Smith in a statement. “This story is so powerful and timeless, and it has been thrilling to work with director Noam Murro and his team and the incredible Steve Mac on this song for it. I hope everyone loves it as much as I do.”

After a year and a half of traveling the world to promote 2017’s The Thrill Of It All, Smith recently told fans that he was headed back to London to take time with family and friends.

After a year and a half of travelling I am finally back home in London!! Farewell 2018. This year has been a year of love, travel, music, lessons, ups and downs, but most importantly a year of YOU… my fans. I’ve loved spending this year with you… pic.twitter.com/5z638WPug0
